I stumbled upon a 1080p bluray source for both seasons. I'll keep cranking on them.

10:54:45
@Raada: Thank you for the links. The mediafire is not my real account
@meridian: crazy4tv has both the seasons of Utopia in 720p-x265. If the links don't work let me know and i will upload them for you.
Just in case i uploaded to uptobox as well:
Ride Upon The Storm S02E03 SUBBED 720p HDTV 2CH x265 HEVC DocMaKS
Ride Upon The Storm S02e09 SUBBED 720p HDTV 2CH x265 HEVC DocMaKS

@reddevil
Thanks. Those links are 4+ years old and no longer working. I'm nearly done with season 1. If you could upload season 2 that would be great. Thanks!
I did get your two files. Episode 3 turned out exactly the same size as my re-encode. It also looked the same. I'd say you have a good start on filling your missing episodes

22:50:02
@meridian: Yea... i saw the exact same size and quality as well. I will encode more missing ones now, as time permits of course, and will post here as well.
Was gonna upload both seasons anyway Sorry for the delay.

@reddevil, thank for the links. I almost missed that there are mirrors. Your encode looks good. If you find time, do the same ep with 131 and my preset just for comparisons.

@Raada: Here they are:
Ride.Upon.The.Storm.S02E03.SUBBED.720p.HDTV.x265-meridian
Ride.Upon.The.Storm.S02E03.SUBBED.720p.HDTV.2CH.x265.HEVC-DocMaKS HB122
Ride.Upon.The.Storm.S02E03.SUBBED.720p.HDTV.x265-Raada_DocMaKS HB131
Nvidia NVENC did not work for me, probably coz my card is very old (drivers are latest though). So changed to normal x265 in your settings.
@meridian: Have a look as well.

@reddevil, d/l now. Big THANKS for using zippy, the box forces me to use a vpn and extra complications, not that I can't, just it results in 50% retries.
@meridian, what overall bit rate are your Utopia BD rips coming out as? The HETeam's rips are in low to mid-700kb/s and decent enough.
Thank you both.

@reddevil & @meridian, I am still trying to upload my version. Here is the mediainfo in the meantime:

@reddevil
Thanks again for the uploads. I got them all. I'm currently downloading the RUtS-203 re-encode you did with Raada's settings. It will be interesting to compare.
@Raada
I don't know the average bitrate. What do you use to get all the stats you posted? That would be handy.
To both of you, I did a comparison of my Utopia re-encodes with those from HETeam. The results were interesting.
First, HETeam saves a few MB of file size by sampling audio at only 24,000 Hz, rather than the standard 48,000 Hz. The scene would hate this. I honestly can't tell the difference. However, I have a constant high-pitched ringing in my ears, so I'm not well qualified to judge.
Second, they definitely encode video at a higher quality. I'm just not sure it's worth it. On average, my video size is only 64% that of HETeam. My guess is that the lower audio sampling is to make up for the greater size from the video.
I've included a .zip file of my numbers and some sample images. In the first set, compare the difference in detail in the man's face and the grain of his leather jacket. In the second set, the green wall at the back left, and the wood grain of the tables.
Notes and samplesIn the next few days, I'll probably set up HandBrake 1.31, and give that a go with mine and Raada's settings, for more comparisons.
This is interesting stuff. Time consuming, but interesting

It took 30 minutes to encode and 30 hours to upload- such is life.......................................................

@meridian, I used my std settings per the json file you have. Overall bit rate : 841 kb/s CQ=30 (that's with v131 which is ~23 with 122)

08:41:04
@Raada
I remembered the Media Info program. Downloaded the latest version.
Average overall bitrate for my Utopia re-encodes is 548. Range is 488-605 across the six episodes.
Thanks for your version of RUtS203. Overall bitrate for my re-encode is only 483.

08:51:57
@meridian, and 2/3 the size.
I'm sure what to call it, but you know how most TV shows and Hallmark type movies have only the subject in focus and the background blurs away?
Now try to remember the old color westerns where you could tell what kind of trees, birds, flowers, etc were in the background- almost like you are there. Low bit rates will blurr that out. I try to avoid that, but I am not aware of any settings to differentiate. I do batches of 100 similar sources, e.g. RARBG 1080p, and let HB encode them to 720p @800-1100 kb/s. I am surely over-doing most of them, but for me time is more of an issue than storage. I'm just finishing assembling a 264TB server. All drives checked, SATA ports installed and drivers working, etc.

22:39:48
@Raada
Depth of field. Something I actually remember from my photography class in college.
264 TB?!? Damn. I barely have a tenth of that. I'm curious then. Why scale down to 720p, and lose the detail of the 1080p source?
@reddevil
I thought I recognized your alt name, DocMaKS, when I first saw it. I've seen you in the comments over on PSA. This may sound weird, but I find your politeness and respectfulness refreshing. Well met!

23:50:18
@meridian, Thanks, I try to remember that. Depth of Field, even sounds logical.
Habits have evolved over time. As d/l capabilities have improved (7KB/s to 200KB/s) slight modifications have crept in. I figure if I had a 1Gb/s line, I'd be dangerous, or in jail. btw, I try to strictly adhere to B=bytes, b=bits. Measurements in 'b' are usually 'burst' rates- theoretical, not real. Measurements in 'B' are usually throughput over a real amount of time, not just ms or even a second, but minutes or hours, sustained throughput. And when your talking about MB, GB and TB that is the important number.
I cannot deny your results. I was waiting for Reddevil to comment, but I cannot see any difference in your examples. And that is really what counts. As for audio, my default is 192kb/s. I can't hear the difference between that and 256kb/s but can hear the difference between 128kb/s. HB simply passes audio bit rate at lower rates, no harm no foul. Audio is less than 10% (typically 7-8%) that I don't worry about that minor difference. I may experiment with making more 1080p. I do all Star Trek, Star Wars and a few others in 1080p 6ch (sometimes I even do both 6ch AAC and 5.1 DD2+). But for common TV series, I don't bother.
Right now, I've the batch encode running so well I don't want to jinx it

23:55:04
@meridian, Hmmm, that got cut off, continuing,
I have about a thousand files backlogged but I am catching up, now. I was able to pause the batch and do our example and resume, which is good to know.
It is obvious the peeps at PSA know what they're doing but no such discussion is allowed. I tried to start such discussions at scene-rls but received some (non-official) negative comments.
So here we are and I appreciate the dialog.
And I swore I used you're not your, oh well.
